Age Distribution

2023

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates, 2019–2023. Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number. Age groups are defined as Under 18 years (children), 18–44 years (young adults), 45–64 years (middle-aged adults), and 65+ years (seniors). ACS 5-Year estimates are multi-year averages representing demographic trends between decennial censuses. Rural counties such as Hancock, Unicoi, and Johnson have larger senior populations, while counties with universities or urban centers, like Washington and Sullivan, have higher proportions of young adults.

*Tri-Cities Consolidated Statistical Area (CSA) includes Carter, Hawkins, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties in Tennessee and the City of Bristol, and Scott and Washington counties in Virginia.
