Hampton High School’s Class of 2026 graduation ceremony was already destined to be emotional. After years marked by unprecedented challenges — from navigating a global pandemic to overcoming the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene — graduates, families, educators, and community members gathered Friday evening to celebrate perseverance, resilience, and achievement.

But one unforgettable moment during the ceremony captured the heart of everyone in attendance.

As Hampton High valedictorian Korbyn Woodby delivered his address to classmates, faculty, and community members, he paused midway through his speech and invited his mother, Carter County Mayor Patty Woodby, to join him on stage. Standing beside him, Mayor Woodby watched as her son removed the academic medals and honor cords draped around his graduation robe and placed them around her neck one by one.

“I would like to thank my mother,” Korbyn told the audience.

He described his mother as someone who had always been his “shield and anchor,” praising her unwavering support, sacrifice, and strength as a single parent raising him and his sister while also serving the citizens of Carter County as the county’s first female mayor.

“To me, she is not the mayor,” he said. “She is just mom.”

The touching tribute resonated deeply throughout the auditorium, especially given the challenges this graduating class has faced. Hurricane Helene forced Hampton High students and staff out of their school building for nearly a year, disrupting routines and daily life in ways few students ever experience. Friday’s graduation ceremony, held inside the school’s rebuilt gymnasium, represented more than simply receiving diplomas — it symbolized the resilience of an entire community determined to move forward together.

Hampton High Principal Kayla Clawson reminded graduates during the ceremony that while storms may damage buildings, they cannot destroy the heart of a community. That spirit of perseverance was reflected throughout the evening as students celebrated not only academic success, but also the strength and determination it took to reach graduation day.

Mayor Woodby, who had also addressed the graduates earlier in the ceremony, spoke about how hardships often shape future success. Her son’s emotional recognition moments later served as a powerful reminder that leadership extends beyond public office and into the countless unseen sacrifices made for family and community alike.

FTDD is proud to have Mayor Patty Woodby serve on our Board of Directors and extends congratulations to both Mayor Woodby and Korbyn on this extraordinary accomplishment and memorable moment. Their story reflects the dedication, resilience, and community spirit that continue to define Carter County and our region as a whole.
