ree

The First Tennessee Development District (FTDD) is pleased to announce that Angie Gwaltney, Director of the Area Agency on Aging & Disability, has been appointed to the Lifelong Tennessee: A Multisector Plan for Aging Well Steering Committee. This statewide initiative brings together leaders from across Tennessee to shape a bold, community-informed vision for aging well across the state.

Angie’s selection is a strong recognition of her longstanding commitment to public service and her deep advocacy for older adults across Northeast Tennessee. In her new role on the Steering Committee, Angie will help guide the creation of a comprehensive and actionable plan designed to enhance aging outcomes for all Tennesseans—especially in rural and historically underserved communities.

The Steering Committee includes voices from diverse sectors including healthcare, housing, transportation, workforce development, and aging services. Members are charged with advancing strategies that promote independence, expand access to critical supports, and strengthen community connectedness for the state’s growing older adult population.

“This appointment is not only a testament to Angie’s leadership and expertise—it’s also a reflection of the vital work taking place in Northeast Tennessee to support healthy aging,” said Mike Harrison, Executive Director of the First Tennessee Development District. “We are proud to have Angie represent our region and ensure that rural communities are well-represented in this statewide planning effort.”

As a Steering Committee member, Angie will participate in a series of planning sessions, contribute local and regional perspectives, and help develop policy recommendations that are inclusive, realistic, and impactful. The committee will begin its work with a kickoff meeting in September, with a finalized statewide plan anticipated in 2026. "My career has been dedicated to ensuring every Tennessean can age with dignity, purpose, and support," explained Gwaltney. "I'm optimistic about the positive changes ahead."

The FTDD is proud to support Angie’s involvement in this initiative and remains committed to advancing aging services and supports that empower individuals to age with dignity, independence, and purpose.
