During her remarkable 46 years of service to the First Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability (FTAAAD), including 29 years as its director, Kathy Whitaker set a standard of leadership, compassion, and unwavering advocacy for older adults in Northeast Tennessee. Her career was defined by a deep commitment to ensuring that seniors had access to essential services, resources, and opportunities to age with dignity and independence. Through her tireless efforts, Kathy made a lasting impact not only on the individuals she served, but also on the agencies, partners, and communities working on their behalf.
In recognition of her enduring legacy and continued spirit of service, the First Tennessee Development District has established the Kathy Whitaker Excellence in Aging Service Award. This annual award honors individuals whose professional work or volunteer service reflects the same dedication, integrity, and passion for improving the lives of older adults that Kathy exemplified throughout her career.
“As a leader and advocate, Kathy Whitaker devoted her life’s work to strengthening services for older adults and ensuring their voices were heard,” said Angie Gwaltney, Director of the Area Agency on Aging and Disability. “This award is a meaningful way to honor her legacy while recognizing those in our communities who continue that important work every day.”
The Kathy Whitaker Excellence in Aging Service Award recognizes individuals who work or volunteer with one or more organizations or programs serving older adults in Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and/or Washington counties. Nominees should demonstrate a sustained commitment to service, a positive impact within their community, and a genuine dedication to enhancing the quality of life for seniors.
Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals by completing the nomination form on our website FTDD.org/nominate. The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 3, 2026.
The award recipient will be formally recognized at the FTAAAD Annual Conference on Aging on April 28 and highlighted through local media outreach to ensure their contributions receive the recognition they deserve.
