Remembering Jim Sells: A Legacy of Leadership and Service

The First Tennessee Development District mourns the passing of Rogersville’s longest-serving Mayor, Mr. Jim Sells. Mr. Sells devoted nearly five decades of his life to public service, serving the Town of Rogersville with distinction as Mayor for an extraordinary 48 years before retiring in June 2025. Sells was the sixth-longest continuously serving mayor in the United States at the time of his retirement. His unprecedented tenure stands as a testament to his deep commitment to the community he loved and to the citizens he faithfully served.
Throughout his distinguished career, Mayor Sells was widely respected for his steady leadership, extensive institutional knowledge, and unwavering dedication to the advancement of Rogersville. His service extended beyond municipal government, as he also played a significant leadership role within the First Tennessee Development District. Mr. Sells served as Chair of the FTDD Board of Directors on multiple occasions and remained a consistent and vocal supporter of the District’s mission to strengthen communities, expand opportunities, and enhance quality of life throughout Northeast Tennessee.
Mayor Sells’ final monthly meeting as Mayor of Rogersville with the FTDD Board of Directors was marked by a meaningful moment of recognition. During the meeting, FTDD Executive Director Mike Harrison presented Mr. Sells with an award honoring his many years of leadership, service, and partnership with the District. In his remarks, Mr. Harrison reflected on the privilege of working alongside Mayor Sells over the years, sharing memories that highlighted his integrity, professionalism, and lasting impact on regional collaboration.
Jim Sells leaves behind a legacy defined by public service, humility, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. His contributions helped shape not only the Town of Rogersville, but also the broader region served by the First Tennessee Development District. His leadership, dedication, and example of service will be remembered with gratitude and respect for generations to come.
