Since its launch in 2020 with just three team members, the Caring Workplaces program has grown into a seven-person department dedicated to transforming lives and strengthening communities through recovery-friendly employment opportunities.

Supported by more than $7.4 million in grant funding from partners including the U.S. Department of Labor, Tennessee Opioid Abatement Council, Governor’s Fund for Financial Relief, and the Appalachian Regional Commission, Caring Workplaces has become a leading force in building a healthier workforce ecosystem across the region.

The program’s mission is simple but powerful: recruit, train, and certify employers as recovery-friendly "Caring Workplaces" while creating a pipeline of supported, work-ready individuals recovering from substance use disorder and/or returning from justice involvement. By connecting employers with qualified individuals and reducing barriers to employment, Caring Workplaces helps create lasting pathways to recovery and economic stability.

Today, Caring Workplaces proudly serves 97 employer partners and has helped place 671 individuals into meaningful employment.

For Workforce Employer Manager Kristina Peters, the most rewarding part of the program is watching its growth and impact.

“Successful employment is tied to successful long-term recovery,” Kristina says. “Being able to reduce stigma around substance use disorder and help individuals rebuild their lives through meaningful work is what drives our mission every day.”

That mission resonates throughout the entire team.

Caring Workplaces Trainer Jennifer Kelly values the program’s dual focus on supporting both employers and employees.

“The Caring Workplaces program creates cultural change within workplaces,” Jennifer explains. “We provide employers with tools and resources to better support employees facing substance use or mental health challenges while helping individuals find opportunities to succeed.”

For Workforce Employer Liaisons Cameron Sydow and Jonica Martin, the greatest reward comes from helping individuals achieve their goals.

Jonica, who is also in recovery herself, says helping clients build confidence and find meaningful employment is deeply personal. “We give people the tools, connections, support, and confidence they need to re-enter the workforce successfully,” she said.

The Caring Workplaces team shares a common passion for serving others. Team members consistently highlight collaboration, authenticity, and a commitment to long-term change as the foundation of their success.

Finance Coordinator Kayla Skeide describes the program as creating a ripple effect of positive change that benefits individuals, families, employers, and entire communities. Assistant Deanna Wood appreciates the opportunity to connect with diverse partners and support a program that reaches underserved populations throughout the region.

The program is known statewide and has trained workforce boards across the state and work with organizations from Memphis to Knoxville. Caring Workplaces is part of the “National Recovery Friendly Workplaces Institute.” From a three-person startup to a workforce program recognized nationally, Caring Workplaces continues to prove that recovery, employment, and community support can work hand-in-hand to change lives and build stronger communities for everyone.

As Caring Workplaces continues to expand, the team remains focused on breaking down barriers, reducing stigma, and creating opportunities for individuals in recovery to thrive.

The department also recognizes the contributions of Workforce Employee Coordinator Scott Vaughn, who joined the team nearly four years ago and recently resigned to transition into full-time ministry as a pastor. His dedication and service have helped shape the success of Caring Workplaces, and he will be greatly missed.
