FTDD Staff Attend ARC Annual Conference Focused on Economic Growth Across Appalachia

Between sessions FTDD staff took a moment to meet Bully, Mississippi State University's mascot, at the ARC Annual Conference

The First Tennessee Development District was well represented at the Appalachian Regional Commission's (ARC) 2026 Annual Conference, Appalachia Builds: Breaking New Ground for Economic Growth, held in Starkville, Mississippi last week.

FTDD Executive Director Mike Harrison, Director of Community Development & Business Financing Christina Wichlin, and Community Development Coordinator Kimberly Reed joined community and economic development leaders from across the Appalachian region to discuss innovative strategies for strengthening local economies and building thriving communities.

Conference attendees heard from ARC Federal Co-Chair Gayle Manchin, 2026 States' Co-Chair Governor Tate Reeves, and Mississippi State University President Mark Keenum, who highlighted the importance of collaboration, infrastructure investment, workforce development, and entrepreneurship in shaping Appalachia's future.

Through a variety of breakout sessions, participants explored best practices for attracting and retaining businesses, enhancing workforce pipelines, improving critical infrastructure, and creating sustainable economic opportunities throughout the region.

By participating in the annual conference, FTDD staff gained valuable insights, resources, and connections that can help support economic and community development efforts throughout Northeast Tennessee. The event reinforced the importance of regional collaboration and continued investment in projects that improve quality of life, create jobs, and strengthen communities across Appalachia.
