Food often makes an event truly memorable — and at the First Tennessee Development District, several of our signature events, including CareerQuest VIP and E2E, have become known for the exceptional dishes prepared by our regional high school culinary programs.

When CareerQuest TN launched in 2017, the vision extended beyond providing career exploration for students. There was also a desire to thank regional leaders and sponsors for their continued investment in the future workforce. To make that possible, Sasha Johnson, Culinary Arts Instructor at Science Hill High School, was asked to assist in creating a small VIP reception. From that first conversation, Sasha transformed a simple idea into an extraordinary experience that continues to grow each year.

The inaugural event quickly became one of the most memorable events of CareerQuest TN, as guests engaged directly with students about their menus and preparation. Its success led to incorporating the VIP reception into the CareerQuest TN event itself, allowing community leaders to experience firsthand the skill and professionalism of participating students. Each year, Sasha and her peers have elevated the event further, impressing even those from outside the region with the caliber of student talent.

A leader in her field, Sasha was among the first culinary arts instructors in Northeast Tennessee to bring professional restaurant experience into the classroom, helping transform traditional home economics programs into true culinary training environments. She continues to mentor new educators, encourage collaboration among schools, and foster opportunities for students to showcase their skills through regional partnerships.

Sasha also played a central role in the creation of the CareerQuest TN Culinary Challenge, an event designed to provide additional competition opportunities for schools that might not have the resources to travel. Her leadership and commitment have helped make Culinary Challenge a highlight of regional career and technical education.

Beyond her classroom, Sasha has been a trusted partner in supporting the expansion of culinary and hospitality education across the region. Her insight and advocacy contributed to the development of new postsecondary programs, including those now offered through Northeast State Community College and East Tennessee State University.

Sasha Johnson’s professionalism, dedication, and service exemplify the values of partnership and excellence that strengthen our region. Her impact extends well beyond her students — influencing the hospitality industry, supporting workforce development, and enhancing the quality of life across Northeast Tennessee.

It is with great appreciation that the First Tennessee Development District recognizes Sasha Johnson as this year’s Valued Partner Award recipient.
